The Grains collection grew out of an exploration of Ourfa embroidery, a centuries-old technique developed and practised by Armenian women. Created by artist Anush Ghukasyan in collaboration with textile artisan Maral Shohmahlian, the collection emerged through a shared process of observation, dialogue, and practice, exploring how inherited knowledge and gestures can find new expressions in contemporary life.
Centred around the table, a place where we gather, share, and create memories, The Grains was conceived to enter the home and become part of its everyday rituals and family traditions. The textile pieces move naturally between the functional and the decorative: they can accompany the table and other surfaces or be framed and displayed on the wall.
What began with textiles gradually expanded into ceramic forms, extending the collection’s visual language into another material while remaining connected to the table and the intimate moments that unfold around it. Together, the pieces reflect on how a practice carried across generations can continue through use, making, and everyday life.
Anush Ghukasyan is a Yerevan-based contemporary artist working across graphic arts, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, video, and site-specific installation.
Moving freely between materials and mediums, her work often develops through unexpected and playful encounters between forms, ideas, and contexts. Repetition and accentuated contrasts are recurring elements of her visual language, creating works that shift between the familiar and the surprising.
